JIMMIE RIVERS AND THE CHEROKEES: Brisbane Bop - Joaqiun 2501

Brisbane Bop is a one of the those records that you have to hear to appreciate, but that's why Sumter recommended this rare collection of music from the relatively unknown Jimmie Rivers. The CD features Western Swing Hall of Fame inductees Jimmy Rivers (lead) and Gene Duncan (rhythm) as well as the steel guitar of Vance Terry, who had the good sense to record these incredible sessions from 1961-1964. Jimmie Rivers is one of the best guitar players you've never heard, with roots in the Western Swing of Bob Wills, but with sophisticated tastes in song choices and influences. You'll hear his affection for Charlie Christian and Barney Kessel in his elegant lines, and enjoy his choice of cover material that ranges from big band classics to '50s Art Pepper (Surf Ride). Brisbane Bop is a historical classic that resulted from recordings made on relatively crude equipment, but it's a keeper.
