TAL FARLOW: Finest Hour - Verve 314 549 6772

Tal Farlow, the self-taught guitar legend, was known for his supreme dexterity and technique. On several of these tracks, Farlow features his drummerless trio of Vinnie Burke, bass and Eddie Costa, piano. The way in which this well-oiled machine interacts is a model for guitarists and any rhythm section players.

Original liner notes to the release which contained these two tracks (*) observed, "Farlow...is like a swinging waterfall with a rare resourcefulness of fresh conception." Tal, who died in 1998, was a gifted musician who spent much of his life working as a sign painter in North Carolina, playing locally and occasionally returning to the recording studios. He also conducted master classes at colleges, including the University of North Texas, in the past decade.

Performers:
Ray Brown, Vinnie Burke, Red Mitchell, Oscar Pettiford: Bass
Eddie Costa, Gerald Wiggins, Claude Williamson: Piano
Tal Farlow, Barry Galbraith: Guitar
Chico Hamilton, Stan Levey, Joe Morello: Drums
Red Norvo : Vibraphone
