When Teddy Wilson played piano, he exuded a certain musical elegance that seemed a natural
extension of his persona. He was the perfect foil for the equally elegant (musically) Benny
Goodman, who hired Wilson and thereby presented the first integrated working group in jazz.
Along with Gene Krupa at the drums, history was made with the Benny Goodman trio (1935), and
then the quartet (add Lionel Hampton).
When Wilson recorded "With Billie in Mind" in 1972 for Chiaroscuro, he had not recorded under his
own name since the early 1960s. The songs are all identified with Billie Holiday - many
when Wilson was leading the recording sessions in the '30s and '40s. One listen, and you'll
wonder why no one had the sense to record him sooner, and be glad that Hank O'Neal put
this session together.
